Dear John
I’m writing to you because today is
World Mental Health Day. The theme this year is
Mental Health in an Unequal World.
As the World Health Organisation
says, there is no health without mental health. Mental health is
inextricable from a huge range of social issues - both in terms of its
causes and broader social implications.
But many of the policies of our
current Government actively make the nation’s mental
health worse.
From cutting Universal Credit to
levying a National Insurance rise, the Government is squeezing
ordinary Britons at a time when living costs are rising exponentially.
This ultimately will push more Britons into
poverty and
exacerbate mental ill-health.
At the same time British people are
facing a hard winter of soaring energy prices, shortages in the shops,
shortages at the petrol pumps and a government whose response to these
crises is to stubbornly, ideologically, keep our borders closed to
overseas workers.
So, this World Mental Health Day,
we’re asking you to spare a couple of moments and sign our petition,
taking a stand and letting the Government know that its
failure to tackle food insecurity and poverty is a stain on
society.
Best wishes,
Naomi Smith
