$1.7 trillion — that’s how much student loan borrowers owe right now.
That’s unacceptable.
I know firsthand what it’s like to struggle with student loan debt. And so do the 45 million current borrowers in our country, whose dreams of owning a house or starting a business have been put on hold because they owe huge debts they simply can’t repay.
That’s why, from the beginning, canceling student debt has been a top priority of mine in Congress. I’ve introduced legislation to cancel it, and I’m working with my fellow progressives to push the Biden administration to cancel at least $50,000.
In fact, we gave a deadline of two weeks to the Department of Education to finally confirm whether the president has the authority to broadly cancel student debt.
Why two weeks? Because we and everyone suffering from the burden of student debt have waited long enough. President Biden asked the Department of Education for this memo six months ago, and it’s well past time to make it public and cancel student loan debt before the temporary pause on payments ends.
If you agree that we need to cancel student loan debt immediately, will you add your name to call on the Biden administration to cancel at least $50,000 for borrowers?
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
