I want to talk about the Democratic nomination for president. Every day I see headline after headline about who's gaining ground, who's losing it, and who got the best picture with a cow in Iowa. It's already a horserace even though the election is over a year away.

What does all this have to do with gerrymandering? I'll tell you: We're seeing a drop in our fundraising numbers, and I think it's because people are paying too much attention to the presidential election and not enough to state and local races.

That's incredibly dangerous, because if Democrats don't pay attention then we risk a repeat of 2010, when Republicans swept statehouses and governor's offices, manipulated the maps for a decade to secure majorities, and then used those majorities to block President Obama's agenda and later prop up President Trump. Don't let it happen again.

Look, I get that everyone cares about what happens at the top of the ticket. But the next decade is too important to let slip away because we weren't focused on down-ballot races. Fair-map advocates already lost a Supreme Court election in Wisconsin earlier this year, and the Louisiana governor's race is headed to a runoff. These are the types of races that will determine whether the next Democratic president and Congress can actually get anything done.

It's not too late to turn things around -- but it means folks like you need to recommit themselves to investing in organizations, like the NDRC, that are doing the work to win on the state and local level. And here's the part where I ask you for money:

What you do right now will make the difference between a decade of progress and a decade of Republican obstruction. Will you give generously to help us fight our hardest to win in the states and secure fair maps in 2021?
