Jack, I am writing to you today to ask you to log in to, or sign up for, Vote Forward, and start writing letters to infrequent, but Democratic-leaning, Virginia voters who need that extra "nudge" to cast a ballot. Virginia will elect a new governor in less than a month, much of the national Democratic agenda is on the line, and polling currently shows a very close race.

The eyes of the political world are on Virginia, where the upcoming election for governor will have an enormous impact on the ability of President Biden and Democrats in Congress to pass legislation over the next year. The D.C. insider political publication The Hill sums the situation up succinctly:
The White House desperately needs Democrat Terry McAuliffe to win next month’s gubernatorial race in Virginia after a brutal period for President Biden.
If McAuliffe falls to Republican Glenn Youngkin, the White House knows it will be seen as a bellwether for next year’s midterm elections and a sign of Biden’s fading popularity and influence.
Right now, President Biden and most Democrats in Congress are trying to pass both the Build Back Better Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act--which combined are the most ambitious public investment programs since The New Deal and the Great Society. While it is possible that they will have succeeded in passing these bills before the November 2 election in Virginia, that's a pretty tight deadline and it is unlikely that everything will be worked out by then.
Given that the outcome of President Biden's massive public investment program will still be up in the air, it is crucial that Democrat Terry McAuliffe wins the Virginia gubernatorial election. If he loses--in a state that President Biden carried by 10 points in 2020--that will be taken as a sign of President Biden's declining popularity and influence. We should all expect the Build Back Better Act to be slashed--or even outright defeated--if the election in Virginia goes against us.
The election in Virginia is really close. A recent poll shows McAuliffe ahead by only 1%. The polling average on Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight shows McAuliffe ahead by only 2.5%. Both of these margins are well within the range of normal polling errors.
There is no question that this is an important election with major national implications. There is no question that this is a close election that Republicans could very well win. But I do have a question for you, Jack: what are you going to do about it?
