Dear John,

Readers will know that a great deal of my time has been spent on Brexit.  I voted for the Prime Minister's new deal and I am frustrated that Parliament is blocking the will of the people. However, amongst all this Brexit angst, I am devoting this week's newsletter to good news on health.

As always, if you have any issues or concerns that you would like to discuss with me then please do not hesitate to get in touch by emailing [email protected].

Best wishes,

Andrew Griffiths

New Operating Theatres for Queen’s Hospital

I am delighted that this week it was announced Burton Queen’s Hospital will be getting two new state of the art operating theatres costing £11 million.  This is a brilliant investment in the hospital, and something I have been lobbying for.

In Parliament the Health Secretary Matt Hancock thanked me for my efforts and explained the role I played in securing this investment.

When I brought him to Queen’s Hospital I also pressed him for investment in the new health village on the Outwoods site.  That resulted in the Department for Health awarding £21.8 million in funding.

You can read more about this news here.

Many people were concerned about what the merger between Queen’s and the Royal Derby would mean for the future of Burton’s hospital.  I hope £33 million announced for investment this year will reassure people that the hospital has a long and secure future ahead.
Success of Cystic Fibrosis campaign

There is nothing worse for parents than to see their children suffer.  I got involved with the cystic fibrosis campaign when two local grandparents came to see me because their grandchildren have cystic fibrosis and wanted access to life changing and lifesaving drugs.

So it is wonderful news that the Government have agreed a deal to provide Orkambi and other lifesaving cystic fibrosis drugs on the NHS.
Michal can start his treatment

Many of you know that just a few weeks ago I was successful in my campaign to get life saving drugs for Burton boy Michal.  Michal is just four and has Batten disease, a form of childhood dementia.  Without access to a new wonder drug Michal will deteriorate rapidly and eventually lose his life. The good news is that Michal has been to see the specialist and his parents have been told he can start the treatment straight away.  What a wonderful success.
Safe in our hands

These kind of announcements only go to demonstrate that the NHS is safe in our hands.  I would like to thank all those who work in our NHS, from doctors and nurses  to catering staff and cleaners. We are all grateful for what you do.
