People in the global south face a myriad of obstacles to get their voices heard at the UK’s UN climate talks this November. The role of civil society from both the global south and north in the negotiations has always been vital, not least to counterbalance the intense corporate lobbying that goes on. But the UK government’s inaction is making it hard for many to get here.

Azul Schvartzman, a young climate activist from Argentina with Unite For Climate Action, will be sharing the story of her struggle to get to the climate talks. She’ll share about how other South American youth activists and grassroots groups all over the world have been hitting a brick wall. Funding, language barriers and visa requirements are all proving hard and the promised vaccines are not arriving in time for many delegates to get to the climate talks.

When the eyes of the world are on Glasgow and people all over the globe are trying to attend, Azul’s journey demonstrates not only the injustice of our government’s attitude to hosting the climate talks but how important it is for those who can get to Glasgow to do so and ensure our voices are heard.

Azul will be joined in person by Cameron Joshi, national organiser of Global Justice Now’s youth network.

The event is part of Stirling Climate Festival, organised by members of Global Justice Now’s youth network. The festival starts tomorrow and runs until Sunday 17 October.
