Dear John,
October's Leading To Health article is focused on postpartum psychosis
treatment in England's mother-baby joint inpatient units.

In the newest Leading To Health
article
,
April Dembosky takes readers to a Mother and Baby Unit in England where
mother-baby joint inpatient admissions are the standard of care for
postpartum psychosis.
The average length-of-stay in Mother and Baby Units is eight weeks.
During that time, mothers receive treatment for their psychosis symptoms
and bond with their children, learning from child development
psychologists and infant nurses.
Even after the mother and baby are discharged, the care continues with
regular nurse visits at home. "These 'health visitors' are a
feature of routine care in England-they visit women who've had
typical birth experiences as well," explains Dembosky.
While Mother and Baby Units exist in several countries, there are none
in the US. Although maternal mortality in the US is twice that of other
high-income countries and mental health problems are among the leading
causes of maternal death, only a handful of other hospitals have opened
their own perinatal or women-only psych units in the US.
