Friend,
UNICEF just released their flagship report, State of the World’s Children 2021, and we’re eager to share their findings with you.
For the first time ever, the report focuses on the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents. On My Mind: Promoting, protecting and caring for children’s mental health takes a look at intervention programs, the cost of neglect on mental health and why this is the moment for action.
1 in 5 young people surveyed report being depressed or having little interest in doing things.
“We need to elevate the topic of mental health care from being a luxury for the rich to being a basic, acceptable and human rights-based service available to everyone...”
- Dr. Rabih El Chammay, psychiatrist and Head of the National Mental Health Program in Lebanon
In some of the world’s poorest countries, governments annually spend less than US$1 per person on treating mental health.
“The AFHS (Adolescent Friendly Health Services) program taught me how to speak, to address my struggles, reach out. No matter how grave the crisis seems, by sharing, anything can be resolved given the proper attention.’’
- Alia, 17, Bangladesh
83% (median) of young people in 21 countries agreed it was better to address mental health issues by sharing experiences than going it alone.
