Just released: "Local Police Departments, 2016: Personnel" [ [link removed] ]
This report is the 11th in a series that began in 1987. It provides personnel information on the approximately 12,300 local police departments in the United States. It describes the number of sworn and civilian staff, demographic characteristics of sworn officers, and personnel assigned to specialized functions.
*Selected Highlights:*
* Local police departments employed about 468,000 full-time sworn officers in 2016.
* Of the 50 largest local police departments, about two-thirds (33) had fewer full-time sworn officers per 10,000 residents in 2016 than in 1997.
* About 3% of all local police departments served populations of 100,000 or more, and they employed about 52% of all full-time sworn police officers.
Findings are based on data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics 2016 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics survey [ [link removed] ].

Just released: "Sheriffs Offices, 2016: Personnel" [ [link removed] ]
This report is the 10th in a series that began in 1986. It provides personnel information on the approximately 3,000 sheriffs offices in the United States. It describes the number of sworn and civilian staff, demographic characteristics of sworn officers, and personnel assigned to specialized functions.
***Selected Highlights:*
* Sheriffs offices employed about 173,000 full-time sworn officers in 2016.
* About 52% (roughly 186,000 out of 360,000) of all full-time staff in sheriffs' offices were limited-sworn or civilian employees.
* The number of full-time limited-sworn or civilian employees in sheriffs' offices increased 20% from 2003 to 2016, while the number of full-time sworn officers was about the same in both years.

Just released: "Federal Law Enforcement Officers, 2016 Statistical Tables" [ [link removed] ]
This report is the 8th in a series that began in 1993. It provides information on the approximately 132,000 full-time federal law enforcement officers employed by 83 federal agencies. The tables in this report provide statistics on the number, functions, and demographics of federal law enforcement officers". "
*Selected Highlights:*
* In 2016, there were about 100,000 full-time federal law enforcement officers in the United States and U.S. territories who primarily provided police protection, compared to 701,000 full-time sworn officers in general-purpose state and local law-enforcement agencies nationwide.
* About two-thirds of all full-time federal law enforcement officers worked for either Customs and Border Protection (33%), the Federal Bureau of Prisons (14%), the FBI (10%), or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (9%).
* Between 2008 and 2016, the Amtrak Police had the largest percentage increase in full-time federal law enforcement officers (40%), followed by the National Park Service Rangers (29%) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (27%).
