Folks — I’m wishing everyone who celebrates a Happy Pride weekend!

Las Vegas and Johnson County, Kansas are celebrating their Pride festivities this weekend. Both Sharice and I know that members of Nevada and Kansas’ LGBTQ+ communities are invaluable and make our states great.

As a staunch advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, I fought hard to pass the Equality Act alongside my friend Sharice. She knows firsthand how personal this fight is for millions of Americans and that guaranteeing equal rights for everyone is just common sense.

The fact of the matter is that there are too few openly LGBTQ+ Americans serving in our federal government. Out of 535 voting members in the House and Senate, only 11 of them identify themselves as openly LGBTQ+. That’s just a little over 2% of Congress!

This Pride, let’s reflect on both the work we’ve accomplished for the LGBTQ+ community and what still lies ahead. The good, necessary work needed to pass equal rights and protections in Congress is going to require a strong Democratic majority to get it done.
