Friend,

This week, I met with a group of young people to discuss ways we can improve all aspects of our education system and make higher education and workforce training programs more affordable and accessible in Rhode Island.

The skyrocketing cost of higher education has put college out of reach for too many Rhode Islanders. Others have the opportunity to graduate from college but then struggle to keep up with their student loan debt which has increased exponentially over the last decade. Many students are not aware of some of the career and technical education programs and apprenticeship opportunities that can be a pipeline to good jobs. Some of the young people in this group were able to enroll in workforce training programs after being unable to afford the cost of four year college, and that training was exactly what they needed to propel them onto a great career track.

This group and other young people around the state will inform my education and workforce training plans and if this impressive group is any indication, the future of Rhode Island is bright. As governor, I will work to make college more affordable, expand apprenticeship opportunities and workforce training programs for those not going to college, and work to improve Rhode Island's public schools so every student has the opportunity to get the education and skills they need. I firmly believe that education is the key to building a stronger, more broad based economy and ensuring that no child's future in Rhode Island is determined by their zip code.

Add your name if you think it's time to address the skyrocketing costs of college and expand job training in Rhode Island so that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
