Centre for Mental Health news

** October 2021
------------------------------------------------------------
Hello from Sarah!
Dear friends,

Today we held an event to mark World Mental Health Day, focusing on the inequality and injustice that drives so much mental ill health. If you missed the live stream you can still hear from our fantastic speakers Rose Ssali, Kadra Abdinasir and Andy Bell by catching up here ([link removed]) .

This week we published important new research ([link removed]) into the mental health needs of girls in the Children & Young People’s Secure Estate. The report shares some difficult findings and makes it clear that we need far more wraparound community support for girls who have experienced trauma and adversity.

October is of course Black History Month, and it’s sad to say that a publication ([link removed]) of ours from 20 years ago, which explored the stereotypes, cultural ignorance and coercion that have often been part of Black people’s experiences with mental health services, still rings true today. While this month gives us an opportunity to reflect, we absolutely must pair that with action to tackle racism in the mental health sphere and beyond.

We also want to share our response ([link removed]) to data published by NHS Digital which shows that children living in poverty have higher rates of mental ill health. We’re calling on the Government to put children’s mental health first and rethink the Universal Credit cut.

Take care,

Sarah
Out of sight: Girls in the Children & Young People's Secure Estate ([link removed])
[link removed]

Young people can be placed in the Children and Young People's Secure Estate (CYPSE) either through child protection legislation or through the youth justice system.

Out of sight highlights that girls entering the CYPSE have high levels of trauma and poor mental health. The report provides an overview of the key challenges facing girls in the CYPSE, calling for a gender-responsive approach, and more community-based alternatives to secure settings.
