Celebrating Indigenous People’s Day

PEAK joins the growing movement to celebrate Indigenous People's Day in lieu of Columbus Day on the second Monday of October. While our offices will be closed on Monday, we encourage you to celebrate with us by reflecting on the experiences and cultural contributions of Native peoples.

To become a part of the larger movement for greater Native recognition, we encourage you to read two resources from new nonprofit initiative IllumiNative: For Our Future: An Advocate's Guide to Supporting Indigenous People's Day and their Insights and Action Guide.

"[R]ecognizing the critical importance of learning alongside our peers, activities conducted in partnership with colleagues who are similarly committed to transforming philanthropic culture and practice provide additional insight into the leading-edge thinking happening at this very moment. When we are intentional in our efforts to cultivate trusting relationships with each other, we are better positioned to uncover specific examples of practice that inform how we can improve both the quality and experience of our work as grantmakers." "[The Satterberg] Foundation views PSOs as places for 'power building, movement building, policy work, building funds. They’re the place to invest for funders who really want to move an agenda and provide a regional perspective. We need them in philanthropy.'" [more]
David Biemesderfer, United Philanthropy Forum

"In the OpenNotes movement, doctors have taken the radical step of directly sharing their medical notes, lab results, and plans—the entire medical record—with patients. They’ve created systems to make those notes easy to access and discuss. … [V]irtually every foundation I’m aware of has similar ‘notes’ in the form of the grant write-ups and recommendations created by program officers for boards and/or senior leadership. Why not open up those notes to the grantees they’re about?" [more]
