Most of the time, district attorneys get all the bad rap. Years of racial bias, the school-to-prison pipeline, and mass incarceration has created a fractured relationship with those who are supposed to protect our communities.

District Attorneys, or prosecutors, operate in a system of unchecked power that allows them to decide who to charge, whether bail is set high or low, who can plea bargain, and more. Progressive DAs like DA Diana Becton promise to end this unfettered discretion by ending cash bail, decriminalizing poverty, mental illness, and substance abuse, to name a few. They are reimagining what “protecting our communities” should look like.
