ASSISTING TENANTS & HOMEOWNERS IN DISTRICT 6
Dept of Finance in My Office Next Tuesday (7/23)
The NYC Department of Finance will be in my district office on Tuesday, July 23rd, from 2pm to 5pm, to assist residents in applying for rental freezes and property tax exemptions. Location: 563 Columbus Ave at 87th Street. If you are a senior citizen or a person with a disability, you may qualify for an exemption from future rent increases through the SCRIE ([link removed]) and DRIE ([link removed]) programs. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities may also qualify for property tax exemptions via the SCHE ([link removed]) and DHE ([link removed]) programs. Veterans and their families may also be eligible.
***Please be advised that my district office will be closed the morning of July 23rd. My staff will be receiving updated training on SCRIE/SCHE to better assist you with these programs.
New Management at NYCHA Wise Towers
As part of NYCHA’s Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT) program, three private sector companies (Community Preservation Corporation, The Community Development Trust, LP, and Monadnock Development LLC) are taking over the rehabilitation and management of Wise Towers. Wise will shift to project-based Section 8 funding, and NYCHA will retain ownership of the buildings and land.
I recently met with residents to discuss the plan. Apartments and common areas will receive badly needed upgrades, including new kitchens and bathrooms. The new management companies have also promised critical improvements for elevator, security, and heating systems, along with enhanced social services and other needs identified by residents.
I support efforts to secure additional funding and improve living conditions for NYCHA tenants, but I absolutely hear residents' concerns about privatization and displacement. As I have said many times, NYCHA must remain 100 percent affordable to all low income New Yorkers. I will be meeting with the management companies shortly and will work with them to ensure that residents remain in their homes and are not negatively impacted in any way by private sector involvement with NYCHA.
Recent Fire on W. 83rd
My office is working with residents who were displaced by a fire on West 83rd Street. We have provided them with the services of a pro bono attorney, and will continue to assist them until they are safely back in their homes.
In a separate case-- remember the landlord who suggested that tenants use the fire escape when work was being done on their staircase? Our office brought out the Dept of Buildings and FDNY to issue violations, require a fire guard to protect tenants while the work was being done, and ensure access to the stairwell. Believe it or not, that landlord is now charging the tenants for the violations and the cure. We are making sure that pro bono lawyers are helping them as well. SUBWAY SERVICE UPDATE
1/2/3 Train Service Suspended for Two August Weekends
Switch replacement work on the Seventh Avenue Line (1/2/3 trains) will be taking place over six summer weekends. During Phase 3, August 16 – 19 and August 23 – 26, there will be no subway service at 1/2/3 stations between Harlem and Downtown Brooklyn. Please click here to learn more ([link removed]) about the work underway and travel alternatives depending on your location.
CITYWIDE NEWS
I was delighted to join my colleagues --Council Members Diana Ayala, Carlina Rivera and Margaret Chin-- as we marched in the Disability Pride Parade this past weekend. Disability rights are human rights!
Justice for Eric Garner
This week I stood with the mother of Eric Garner, Gwen Carr, and community leaders and advocates as we called on Mayor de Blasio to fire NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for his role in Eric's death. The fact that Officer Pantaleo continues to receive a salary, and has not been subject to any disciplinary action, is incomprehensible. We won't stop fighting until there is justice for Eric.
Please stay cool and safe this weekend. As always, don't hesitate to contact my City Hall (212-788-6975) or District (212-873-0282) offices with any questions about our work.
Warmly,
