Brexit - Last Week, This Week and Next...
Like the majority of the nation, I was hopeful that the first Saturday sitting of Parliament in more than three decades, organised specifically to come to a resolution on Brexit, would result in this being achieved. I am sorry to say I was wrong. In my view, it would have been more productive for MPs to take the opportunity to agree the Prime Minister's deal and move forward from there.
Unfortunately, Saturday's sitting led to even more confusion this week. I voted to take the Prime Minister's deal forward and was pleased that a majority of MPs did too. However, opposition MPs did not agree to the timetable which would have seen it passed into law in time for us to leave the EU on 31st October. In my view, having debated Brexit for more than three years and for over 500 hours, we were in the position to agree the deal and move the country forward.
So next week, the Prime Minister has offered more time to debate the legislation and get Brexit done. At the same time, Boris Johnson will again call for an early General Election and we expect to vote on this on Monday. If Jeremy Corbyn and opposition parties vote against this, it will be the third time they have refused a General Election, despite repeatedly calling for one. If Parliament won't let the Government govern, then it is only right to go back to people with a General Election.
My Views
In addition to regular casework correspondence, I receive a number of campaign emails and postcards each month regarding various topics. While I always prefer to get back to people directly in the first instance, each month I publish these views on my website. You can read these here.
Surgeries
I hold regular surgeries both at my office in Cheadle Hulme and around the constituency. If you would like an appointment then please do get in touch via the details below and let me know the issues you'd like assistance with. It may be possible that I can help you right away.
