In the age of instantaneous retrieval of information, what use is there in memorizing a poem?
More than you might think
, argues ([link removed]) Wyoming Catholic College president Glenn Arbery in The Imaginative Conservative.
A poem “gives language to a feeling,” he says. And when we commit it to memory we become better able to recognize our world and the “center of our being.”
This, Arbery suggests, is what education should offer in any age: wisdom to make sense of our world and understand our own existence.
