When I ran to represent New York's 2nd Congressional District in 2020, I knew it was going to be a tough race.
See, I was a little different than the other candidates. I'm a Jamaican immigrant and an Army veteran who ran as a Democrat in a swing district that Trump carried by 9 points. And if I won, I would've become the first Black woman ever elected to Congress from a New York district outside of New York City.
I knew that it wouldn't be easy, but I persisted because I wanted to make a real difference for folks like you and me who are left behind by our government all too often.
But ultimately, what derailed my campaign was far more sinister: ruthless Republican attack ads.
The GOP was threatened by my campaign's momentum and our plan to empower working families, so they smeared my years of military service on the airwaves in a disgraceful attempt to undermine my campaign.
