Friend -
Farhia Mohamad Geedi used to own 100 goats and 100 sheep - but none survived when drought struck the Horn of Africa. Farhia is a pastoralist, so she's used to following the movements of her animals and the changing seasons. But due to the devastating drought, entire communities - filled with families like Farhia's - have been forced to move six times in five months in search of drinkable water they need to survive.
"Our animals started dying in October-November. The last animals we had died in February," she said. "We were trying to follow the rain - moving according to where the rains were supposed to come. But they haven't. If the rains don't come, none of us will survive."
Droughts happen - but this drought was worse than usual. Due to the impact of climate change, the Horn of Africa was hit by an 18-month drought that caused a catastrophe - with failed crops, dead livestock, and a lack of clean water. Across East Africa, millions of families faced severe hunger in the aftermath of the 2016-2017 drought.
When the drought struck, the Oxfam community was there - helping families with access to food, clean water, and sanitation services. And wherever the next climate disaster strikes, we'll be there, too, thanks to your support.
Friend - in the face of climate change, natural weather events like droughts are intensifying. But thanks to supporters like you, Oxfam is able to help those directly impacted by climate change, in the Horn of Africa and more than 90 countries around the world.

When drought struck northern Kenya, Oxfam and partners knew from our experience dealing with these disasters that the most urgent need was for water. One way we made it available was through electronic water meters, or water ATMs. With the ATM system, people received tags which could be loaded up with funds at shops or through money transfers. Then the customer took the tag up to the ATM and received water.
With water ATMs, the long lines at the old kiosks where water was sold were eliminated. The ATMs were open 24 hours a day and never ran out of water, since they were connected to boreholes. This is the kind of work you support when you make a gift to Oxfam - innovative solutions to make vital resources like clean water available to families in dire situations.
Friend, thanks to you, Oxfam and our partners can provide access to clean water for families facing climate disasters. Climate change is already causing families hardships in East Africa and around the world. And together with Oxfam, you're helping fight back.
