We Remember. We Are Resolved.

Dear John,

Almost exactly a year ago, on Saturday, October 27th at 9:54 am, a heavily armed white supremacist entered the Tree of Life synagogue building in Pittsburgh and began the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history. It took the killer less than 11 minutes to take 11 lives.

That morning, I was at Shabbat services with my family. I had just walked out of services when the ADL staff urgently reached me, sharing the initial reports about the unfolding tragedy in Pittsburgh and how our team was already swinging into action to provide critical support to the devastated community and to support law enforcement with vital information about the extremist threat and about the profile of the alleged perpetrator. Each of us, in the midst of our own immeasurable sadness, channeled our grief into our work.

You probably recall where you were when you heard the news. This year, on October 27, how will you remember — and how will you act?

As you read this, I’m in Pittsburgh. All weekend, ADL leaders will be standing shoulder to shoulder with members of this grieving community.

On Sunday, we will join a day of solidarity. Some of us will bake and deliver cookies to thank first responders, who were on the front lines on the day of the attack. We'll participate in a community-wide interfaith Torah study about joining together against hate. In the evening, we’ll take part in a gathering to remember the victims, support those still suffering and inspire hope for the future.

But simply to mourn and simply to remember — which we must — is insufficient for the moment we are in. It's not enough.

That’s why ADL is proposing 11 ways you can take action in memory of those slain in Pittsburgh and all those who have been killed while worshipping in a synagogue, a mosque or a church in the past year through

11 Actions for 11 Lives. I encourage you to choose at least one and make this a weekend of resolve and support as well as remembrance and reflection.

Over the past year, we have seen hate enter our most sacred spaces in Pittsburgh, Poway, and most recently, Halle, Germany.

A new ADL report looks at over fifty times since the attack in Pittsburgh that Jewish institutions in the U.S. have been targeted by extremists, and there were 780 incidents against Jews and Jewish targets reported in just the first half of this year, as noted in

this moving 60 Minutes video about these ongoing threats and how Pittsburgh is recovering a year later.

We have also seen so many individual Jews on streets and sidewalks who were confronted, abused and even physically attacked merely for being visibly Jewish.

Some of the threats to Jewish institutions have been intercepted and thwarted thanks to ADL’s Center on Extremism team, which helps law enforcement by vigilantly monitoring the dark corners of the Internet to help spot extremists before violence happens.

We have also intensified our work across the country to help Jewish institutions and other houses of worship address security concerns.

I invite you to stand with me, with ADL, with your family and friends and most importantly, with the grieving Pittsburgh community to remember the eleven lives lost, and to show our support for those still suffering and to protect those in need of protection.
Best,

Jonathan Greenblatt

Never Is Now, ADL’s annual conference on anti-Semitism and hate. Join us there to address hate in all of the many places it emerges, whether in our own communities, online, on college campuses or around the globe. I hope you’ll join me in New York on Nov. 21st.

You can register right now — let that be one action you take this weekend to speak out against anti-Semitism and extremism.
