Tell Congress to support the WATER Act and get lead out of our water now!
John,
We shouldn't have to worry about whether the water in our homes and schools is safe to drink. A recent study found that more than half of young children have detectable levels of lead in their blood. Children are especially vulnerable to lead exposure, due to their developing brains.
No amount of lead is safe, and these findings should raise alarms and drive our elected officials to action. We need your help to make sure this happens. Proper federal investment in our public water infrastructure will keep lead out of water to protect children, prioritize our communities and ensure public water for all.
The best solution is the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity, and Reliability (WATER) Act, which would deliver the funding necessary to meet the country’s water needs for the years to come.
Congress is entering the home stretch for finalizing the budget and infrastructure bills. This legislation will determine whether or not school districts and water systems receive the necessary funding needed to get lead out of our water. In other words, there’s a lot at stake in the fight for clean water.
As it stands, the House has designated $30 billion to remove lead pipes and another $700 million for schools to remove lead from drinking water. We need our senators to make sure this level of funding survives in the final package!
The WATER Act would expand a grant program to replace all lead plumbing in public schools, dedicating $1.1 billion a year to schools. The legislation would also:
Reinvest federal dollars to provide a total of $35 billion annually to drinking water and wastewater improvements
Create up to one million jobs across the economy and protect workers
Prioritize disadvantaged communities with grants and expand technical assistance to small, rural and indigenous communities
Help homeowners replace lead service lines, remove PFAS from drinking water, and upgrade household wells and septic systems
Every community and every person needs safe, lead-free water. It’s our most basic human right. Anything less than a full solution to this public health threat is unacceptable.
