NASN, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and a group of health and education organizations have joined together to release a Consensus Statement on the Core Tenets of Chronic Condition Management in Schools. The core tenets outlined in this statement provide a structure for leveraging new partnerships and funding to develop a model that fully embeds and supports the health and well-being of all children, including those with chronic conditions. LEARN MORE Paid advertisement Position Statement: The Behavioral Health and Wellness of Students It is NASN's position that student behavioral health and wellness must be prioritized for students to successfully access and engage in educational opportunities. It is imperative that school systems respond to, and address, student behavioral health and wellness to ameliorate disparities related to the social determinants of health (Combe, 2019). School nurses are often the initial access point to identify concerns, determine interventions, and link families to school and/or community resources. In the upcoming election, NASN members will select a vice president and a nominating committee member. The election will be conducted online from March 15, 2022 to April 15, 2022. LEARN MORE Clinical Practice Guideline: Medication Administration in Schools School nurses care for 56.4 million students in elementary, middle, and high school across the United States, 25% of whom have chronic conditions, many of whom require medication during the school day. NASN's guideline seeks to create a uniform clinical practice guideline for the administration of medication in schools, and to give the school nurse evidence-based recommendations for the safe care of Pre-K-12 students who receive medications during the day. Because of this, NASN is extending the conference deadline to October 15. Data from a small clinical trial shows that a Pfizer-BioNTech booster shot increased the immune response in trial participants who finished their primary series six months earlier. With an increased immune response, people should have improved protection against COVID-19, including the Delta variant. Occupations that put employees at greater risk, including healthcare and education may get a booster shot. Learn more. New CDC Resource on Multisystem Inflammatory Disease (MIS-C) CDC has developed and tested new materials to support healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children including factsheets for parents. NASN's COVID-19 Interactive Tools Can I Send My Student to School: Designed for school nurses to share with families, this interactive tool is based on CDC COVID-19 guidance and designed to guide families through assessing when their child should stay home from school. How to Manage Difficult Conversations: A quick micro-burst of learning, this interactive module teaches school nurses a simple formula to use to respond effectively to challenging conversations. COVID-19 and Students, Frequently Asked Questions: A resource designed to answer some questions families may have about students' health during COVID-19 and to support families with links to find additional resources. Managing Chronic Health Conditions NASN Joins AAP in Consensus Statement on the Core Tenets of Chronic Condition Management in Schools NASN has signed on with the American Academy of Pediatrics and a broad group of health and education organizations to release a Consensus Statement on the Core Tenets of Chronic Condition Management in Schools. This statement aims to improve health and academic outcomes for children by establishing a common framework that can be used by schools and their partners to guide an integrated, collective, and equitable approach to chronic condition management in schools. Improving School Community and Student Health New School Located Vaccination Resource NASN partnered with the Association of Immunization Managers (AIM) to develop these reports on SLVs. These reports were completed in tandem and should be reviewed as a complementary pair. The reports describe various models of SLVs implemented, successes and challenges, and opportunities to continue supporting SLVs to promote influenza, COVID-19, and childhood vaccinations. Please note in the coming months, these high-level reports will be utilized to publish digestible and actional tools for immunization programs, school nurses, and more! Global Handwashing Day is October 15 October 15 is Global Handwashing Day, a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. Grant Writing Strategies for Small Projects in the School Setting (1 CNE) Opportunities exist for those with a vested interest in school health, particularly school nurses, to apply for grants that will promote the health and well-being of children where they play, live, and attend school. Learners will be able to engage in the grant writing process as it relates to school health and will be able to identify methods for incorporating grant writing into their practice and how it fits within the Framework for 21st Century Nursing Practice®. At the conclusion, learners will be able to articulate at least one research question and one specific aim. In addition, two mothers (including a fellow nurse) who each lost their adolescent daughters to a vaccine-preventable disease (Meningitis B) will share best practices for increasing awareness and the uptake of vaccination.
