donation trends from 2015 through 2019, and 2020. It also examines diversity and representation within the nonprofit sector and details the first-year effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on nonprofits. The researchers identify the following key takeaways:
- From 2015 to 2019, 58% of nonprofits experienced donation growth and 32% experienced stable donations—but fewer people of color-led organizations experienced donation growth over that period.
- The disruptions of 2020 were felt by nonprofits of all sizes, but a greater share of small organizations, which make up most of the sector and depend most heavily on donations, experienced decreased donations in 2020.
- A larger share of organizations in urban cores than in rural areas reported that overall donations increased from 2015 through 2019, but that trend reversed in 2020.
- 40% of organizations reported losses in total revenue for 2020. These organizations lost an average of 31% of total revenue and 7% of their paid staff by the end of the year.
- 70% of nonprofits include one or more board members who are people of color, 44% include one or more board members with a disclosed disability, and 34% include one or more members who identify as LGBTQ+. Half of board members on average identify as women.
- 16% of nonprofits primarily serving people of color have all-white boards while 58% of rural nonprofits have no board members of color. This research is the first developed though

a collaboration between Urban Institute, American University, and George Mason University to improve research on the nonprofit sector, share what is learned with the nonprofit and research communities, and help policymakers and the public make informed decisions that impact nonprofit organizations. This unprecedented analysis provides a baseline for future annual surveys that will build longitudinal and nationally representative data of nonprofit organizations.
