I'm pissed off today, John.
Why is it that in the United States of America, in the year 2021, given all the comforts and luxuries and relatively pretty good quality of life at our fingertips, that we’re forced, again and again and again and again, to watch THIS happen:
[link removed]
That’s a text message from a student — a child — to their mom during a mass shooting at their high school in Texas yesterday.
The worst part is — the part that has always been true, always will be true — is that we do not have to do this. We do not have to sit by and let this happen.
I want to talk about this because just a few days ago, my opponent Scott Franklin tweeted that “I will vote against the 2022 NDAA final passage unless the so-called ‘Red Flag’ law is removed from the bill.”
For those who don’t know, Red Flag laws, according to this super helpful piece from the Washington Post about the myths surrounding them [link removed], “allow law enforcement — and in some states, family, household members and other community members — to ask a court to temporarily prevent people from possessing guns if they pose a risk to themselves or others.”
Scott Franklin can’t even get behind removing guns from people even when there is an imminent threat of violence. This kind of extremism is why it is so hard to pass common-sense gun safety regulation.
But you know what? What we can do is work our butts off to ensure that people like Scott Franklin are never elected again to Congress, where their cowardice perpetuates the harm and violence caused every day by guns gone wild in our country.
Make a contribution now if you want to help us work towards a vision of America where we never again have to read about another mass shooting. secure.actblue.com/donate/geller-email-q4?refcode=fl_em_fr_20211007redflag_EG_all_xx_pt
Thanks for letting me vent.
