Dangerous Days at the Supreme Court

We can’t let the separation of church and state fall on our watch.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌        ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌        ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌        ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌        ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌        ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Friend, the fate of Roe v. Wade is just one item on the Supreme Court’s docket that takes aim at your life and values. Everyone’s right to live free from religious coercion is on the line.

The new Supreme Court term that began on Monday poses multiple threats to the future of church-state separation. Help AU sound the alarm and do everything in our power to influence debate and deliberation. Please contribute NOW.

The Supreme Court we feared has arrived.

This week, it gaveled to order a 2021-22 session that could give religious extremists and Christian nationalists sweeping new powers to dictate our lives and defy the constitutional separation of religion and government.

Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization could lead to many states outlawing abortion and force vulnerable women to return to dangerous and unsafe options. It’s the most important abortion case in 30 years.

Carson v. Makin could force states and taxpayers to pay for private religious education. It could produce the second Supreme Court victory for private school voucher proponents in three years.

Shurtleff v. Boston could force cities and towns nationwide to display divisive religious symbols, such as Christian flags, on public property. Displays of crosses and the Ten Commandments could rise at every courthouse and municipal building that allows public displays.

The Court’s 6-3 conservative majority chose these cases to advance a pro-Christian nationalist agenda fully at odds with the constitutional separation of church and state. And they may well have the votes to make rulings in these cases as far-reaching as possible.

There has never been a Supreme Court term where AU’s legal advocacy and public voice are needed more. Please help us rise to combat these dangerous threats with everything we’ve got by making a generous contribution right now.

What will your gift accomplish?

  • You’ll help AU write powerful friend-of-the-court briefs, joined by our religious and secular friends, that underscore how and why these three cases are crucially important to protecting America’s core tenet of religious freedom that protects everyone equally.

Dobbs is by far the most dangerous, as it threatens to permit elevation of a theological definition of “when life begins” into the law in response to a strident religious crusade to control women’s bodies.

  • Beyond the legal analysis, we’ll also vividly demonstrate the human impact of rulings that further empower religious extremists to dictate our laws and discriminate against anyone they don’t like, don’t want to work with or do business with, or consider second class. We will make the link between religious extremism and the threats to our rights clear to everyone.

  • And your gift will help us mitigate the scope and content of Supreme Court rulings to do as little harm as possible, rally the public to denounce them, and hold the Court accountable for advancing a Christian nationalist agenda that betrays the First Amendment rights of hundreds of millions of Americans.

We cannot retreat from these challenges. They strike at the very heart of AU’s mission and the church-state separation that binds us together as Americans and as supporters of AU.

Your action is urgently needed right now. Please click this link to make a personal contribution that reflects your conviction that Christian nationalists cannot hijack our laws, our common ground, our schools, our democracy.

This is the time to raise your voice and meet this threat head on. Please don’t delay. Let me hear from you today.

In solidarity,
