The Fight for a Hunger Free America this October

Hunger Free America has long advocated for universal school meals, as making school breakfast and lunch free to all students has been shown to reduce child hunger, improve health outcomes, and boost academic achievement. National School Lunch Week starts October 11th, and we're asking all of you to celebrate with us by showing your support for universal school meals. Sign our petition to tell Congress to pass the Universal School Meals Program Act.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we're honoring just a few of the many Hispanic food justice advocates who are leading the way for workers' rights and the fight against hunger. Be sure to follow us on Instagram to learn more about Hispanic leaders in the food justice movement.
In a huge victory for the anti-hunger movement, the new permanent increase to SNAP benefits went into effect on October 1st. Hunger Free America is thrilled with this benefits boost, as it will allow the 40 million Americans who rely on SNAP to afford healthier food options for their families. Learn more about what the permanent SNAP increase means.
Hunger Free America fully supports the Enhanced Access to SNAP (EATS) Act, which would permanently expand SNAP eligibility for college students. Even before the pandemic, more than 40 percent of college students reported having challenges affording sufficient food. The EATS Act would be a huge step in ensuring that more college students are eligible for SNAP without requiring students to work on top of their academic workload. Learn more about hunger among college students.
Learn about our newest volunteerism program: Students for Hunger Free America. Students for HFA is a youth leadership program that provides middle school, high school, and college students with the tools needed to increase SNAP participation in their communities. Participants will learn about the root causes of hunger, advocate for policies that will improve food security, and mobilize their peers to get involved and promote food justice. Learn more.
