On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks sat so that this nation could stand up for the values that our democracy holds so dear.

Her refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus was the spark that fueled a massive civil rights movement, not just in Alabama but across the nation.

As a Selma native, I’m proud to have helped introduce the Rosa Parks Day Act. This bill would create Rosa Parks Day, to be celebrated on December 1. Will you sign our petition today to show you support making Rosa Parks Day a national holiday?

As the representative of America’s Civil Rights District, where many of the pivotal events of the Civil Rights Movement occurred, I take seriously my responsibility to protect and further the legacies of those who have worked to uplift human dignity.

Rosa Parks is one such person whose legacy must be preserved for generations to come.

Though we have come so far in defending the rights and dignity of vulnerable Americans, there is still much work to be done. There is still injustice to be righted. There are still people to be uplifted.

The creation of Rosa Parks Day would signify a new beginning for our defense of justice, and our nation as a whole. Will you add your name and show your support for making December 1st Rosa Parks Day?
