Friend: Globally, only about 2 percent of people living in low-income countries have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The contrast we see between the United States and many low-income countries with respect to COVID-19 vaccine access is alarming and, frankly, unjust.
Earlier this summer, we asked you to join us in demanding equitable vaccine access for all. Since then, the Biden administration has announced plans to purchase one billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for global distribution. While this is a great first step, it doesn’t go far enough fast enough.
In many parts of the world, COVID-19 vaccines remain scarce and people continue to die from the virus at alarming rates. Additional manufacturers stand ready to help boost the global supply, but cannot do so because Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna refuse to share the information and expertise needed for these manufacturers to make more doses.
That’s why Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is calling on the Biden Administration to demand these companies immediately share the vaccine technology and knowledge with manufacturers around the world and help boost the global supply.
Consider this: Billions in public funding were invested for the development of mRNA technology, including your tax dollars. These companies should be held accountable for this public investment and facilitate vaccine manufacturing scale-up around the world.
