The Title 42 policy was established during the previous administration, using the pandemic as a blanket justification to deny people access to safety in the U.S.
This policy was put into place despite agreement by public health officials that there is no public health rationale for denying people their legal right to claim asylum at the U.S. border. Contrary to promises made during the early days of his administration to end anti-asylum policies and practices, President Biden has yet to repeal Title 42, and at the same time has failed to implement common sense public health measures such as comprehensive testing and health screening, quarantine support and reduced processing times.
Let me make this clear, John: As long as Title 42 remains in place, Haitians and other asylum seekers are being sent back to life-threatening situations without the opportunity to exercise their legal right to express why they fled in the first place.
Seeking asylum is legal. No one should be criminalized or abused simply for exercising this right. |
