As you're all undoubtedly aware, Capitol Hill is abuzz with the active negotiations over the Biden Build Back Better Infrastructure Package, and we're excited because of what its passage could mean for Colorado!
JOIN US THIS THURSDAY when we will discuss with community members, experts, and elected officials what we need to do to build back better, how TABOR has held our state back from building back stronger, and how you can help be part of the infrastructure solution!
|
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
President Joe Biden was in Colorado recently to not only talk about why we need to combat climate change, but to talk about how we can do it by rebuilding our infrastructure and create jobs! Biden's bipartisan infrastructure bill, which is currently going through negotiations in Congress, would:
- The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is the single largest dedicated bridge investment since the construction of the interstate highway system. Based on formula funding alone, Colorado could expect to receive $3.7 billion for federal-aid highway apportioned programs and $225 million for bridge replacement and repairs under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act over five years when passed. (KKTV, 8.4.21)
- Additionally, under the bill, thanks to Senator Michael Bennet, Colorado would receive a minimum allocation of $100 million to help provide broadband coverage across the state. This would also include providing access to the 85,000+ Coloradans currently lacking access. (KKTV, 8.4.21)
We'll be talking about the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act at the town hall, so be sure to sign up and join in on the discussion! In the meantime, if you want to learn more, click here to read information from the White House!

The Independent Legislative Redistricting Commission released a third staff-drawn map on Tuesday. Click here to check it out, and check out our statement reacting to the draft map:
“We are pleased that these latest draft legislative maps are a step closer to being fair and reflective of Colorado’s communities of interest. They stand in sharp contrast to maps being pushed by certain GOP commissioners, who noticeably have been pushing maps that either unfairly benefit Republicans or marginalize Colorado minority voters.”

City To Fund Critical Projects With American Rescue Plan Act Dollars
Boulder.gov
Over the next year, the City of Boulder will receive $20.15 million in local recovery funding from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The city has until the end of 2024 to formally commit funds and until 2026 to spend them. ARPA is designed to help communities and local governments recover from the pandemic, especially those who have been disproportionately impacted.
About $3 million of the funding has been approved for immediate needs and will go toward programs to support those most impacted by the pandemic, including:
- Emergency rental assistance and critical human service needs
- Small business and local economic recovery assistance, including direct support to the hardest hit industries
- Utility bill assistance
- Addressing disparities in digital access by helping community members living in Boulder Housing Partner sites to obtain free high-speed internet access
- Some city service restoration and updating virtual capability in city facilities
An additional $1 million is reserved for emerging public health needs that may arise in the coming months.

Remember -- Colorado Republicans like Lauren Boebert, Ken Buck, and Doug Lamborn all voted 'No' to helping Colorado families.
Meanwhile, all of Colorado's Democratic members of the Congressional delegation voted 'Yes'!
But how else does the American Rescue Plan specifically help Coloradans, you ask? Click the link to find out!

Afghan interpreter and his family land in Colorado to start a new life in Broomfield
CPR News
An Afghan interpreter and his family landed at Denver International Airport Tuesday night to settle in at their new home after the fall and evacuation of Kabul.
Ahmad Siddiqi, his wife and four kids fled Afghanistan in August and hadn’t found a permanent residence yet. He turned to Army veteran Scott Henkel, husband of Broomfield City Councilwoman Heidi Henkel, for help. They met while Henkel was serving in Afghanistan in 2006, and the two worked with Rep. Jason Crow and Rep. Joe Neguse’s offices to expedite the process.

Meet Kate, this week's Volunteer of the Week!
I am new to political volunteering and not naturally political. My political activism was triggered by Donald Trump’s announcing his candidacy for President. My sister, a former hippie, started dragging me to rallies and marches, including the Women’s March and a rally at Corey Gardner’s office, where we played dead (to protest his stand on Obama Care).
I’ve been a long-time volunteer for charitable organizations. The issues I am most passionate about are elder care, immigration, mental health, and social justice. I have served ten years on the Board of People House, a non-profit organization offering low-cost mental health counseling. Recently I started working for Casa De Paz as a companion to immigrants released from ICE. Casa De Paz offers shelter, meals, plane/bus tickets, transportation, and emotional support to newly released immigrants
My latest adventure in volunteering for the Colorado Democratic Party began with my friend asking if I was willing to call potential volunteers. I love this friend so, of course, I agreed. As I’ve gotten into this role, I am getting more and more excited. We have the mid-term elections coming up and, with Colorado’s re-districting, it is going to take all of our efforts to maintain Colorado’s Democratic status.
Please invite your friends and family members to volunteer. We are going to need a lot of help in 2022
