Friend –
The Texas abortion ban forced Democrats across the country (including Michigan) to open our eyes to a terrifying reality in which a state government cannot provide people with safe reproductive care, including abortion.
In Michigan, we have a 1930s law on the books that bans abortion and criminalizes reproductive services. This arcane law is superseded by Roe v. Wade, but if the U.S. Supreme Court were to overturn Roe v. Wade, abortions and reproductive care would become illegal in Michigan.
Thankfully in Michigan, we have Democratic leaders who will fight for us and work to prevent anything like what happened in Texas from happening here. A group of Democratic state senators have sponsored Senate Bill 70, which would repeal that 1930s law and allow people to remain in control of their own health care decisions.
Governor Whitmer called on the legislature to pass the bill, and it currently sits on the desks of Republicans in the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, with no hearing date in sight.
We can and will continue to elect Democrats in Michigan who will fight legislation like this and ensure that the people of Michigan are never stripped of their reproductive rights.
This is why we need your support in order to continue putting in the work, leading the charge, and electing Democrats. Support us with a donation today so that we can provide our field organizers with the resources they need to get out the vote in the upcoming elections and beyond.
We are counting on you to help us elect more Democrats into office and keep reproductive services and abortion safe and legal in Michigan. If you can’t make a donation today, but would like resources on being a Reproductive Rights Ally or resources on finding reproductive services, visit our Repro-Rights toolkit at michigandems.com/toolkit/reproductive-rights-toolkit/.
