John,
Over the past several weeks, it’s been clearer than ever that the Supreme Court and many Republican state legislatures across the country are ready to undermine Roe v. Wade and the right to a safe, legal abortion for good.
But the reality is that for many, this isn’t new. For many people, safe and legal abortion care has always been difficult to access because of the Hyde Amendment, a discriminatory, anti-choice federal budget provision that bans federal funding from covering abortion services with very few exceptions — putting it out of reach for many insured through Medicaid.
The Hyde Amendment was a barrier to care when I was a physician specializing in women’s health, and it continues to be a barrier today.
Abortion is health care — period. Cost should never stop anyone from getting the care they need. But when a procedure can easily cost thousands of dollars out-of-pocket, women can be priced out of the care they need, regardless of the consequences.
So, if you agree that it’s past time Congress repeals the Hyde Amendment and makes abortion care accessible to everyone, no matter their income, please add your name next to mine.
We have a real opportunity to strengthen our Democratic majorities with more reproductive rights champions and get rid of the Hyde Amendment for good.
I’m ready to be that champion for Pennsylvanians. Thanks for your support.
With determination,
Val
