Global experts and leaders are sounding the alarm bells that climate change is the defining crisis of our time. Its disruptive human impacts are already being felt in communities around the world as extreme weather patterns, rising temperatures, droughts, and other changes are threatening livelihoods and contributing to conflict. The World Bank estimates there will be 143 million more climate migrants by 2050; and worldwide, more than 1 billion people will live in countries with insufficient physical and social infrastructure to withstand climate change.

What should governments and global actors do to mitigate the plight of climate refugees and the destabilizing effects of mass migration on international governance and cooperation?

Join Foreign Policy, in partnership with Chemonics International, as we convene a virtual dialogue on “Addressing the Root Causes of Climate Migration.” A panel of elected officials and on-the-ground practitioners will explore how governments and local communities are confronting these threats, including an increased focus on mitigation and adaptation efforts as well as climate-resilient approaches to international development. In the lead-up to the U.N. Climate Change Conference, how are leaders hoping to mobilize support for international standards to address climate refugees, and what new data-driven, risk-informed strategies can support a more climate-resilient future for vulnerable communities?

Hear from these speakers:
  • Rep. Joaquin Castro, Democrat, Texas
  • Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Mayor of Freetown, Sierra Leone
  • Justin Ginnetti, Senior Officer, Information Management and Risk Analysis, IFRC
  • Jami Montgomery, Division Chief for the Resilient Communities and Systems, U.S. Agency for International Development Center for Resilience
