Fossil fuels are poisoning our world. We feel their pernicious effect as we choke on air filled with the ash of dead forests, as we know our respite from summer temperatures in October only came because the smoke has blocked out the sun, and as the remnants of our coastal ecosystems die in oil sludge. We have run out of time to rely on a voluntary switch to non-carbon energy. Drastic, global action is mandatory, and the deadline was decades ago.
Green energy’s recent advances through the market economy are not enough to save us. The government strategies to make renewable energy profitable have served to promote the development of renewable energy technologies by making them more profitable. However, the time for that is past.
After the advances of recent decades, the gap we face is no longer one of technological potential but rather of implementation and scale. To save our world, we need to completely replace our energy use by eliminating carbon sources, and in a market economy that means electric equipment needs to be cheaper than fossil fuels. There needs to be surplus green electric production, and our current strategies cannot get us there.
How are we to achieve the needed level of surplus electricity production when profits go down with every bit of capacity that is added? How can we execute a switchover, when each new solar or wind farm has less chance of recouping its cost?
The ball is securely rolling on technological development, with solar panels cheap and efficient enough that displaced Syrian refugees are setting them up in tent camps and the bombed-out shells of damaged cities. The name of the green energy game is now replacement, not development. The only way to save ourselves is to destroy our current power system and replace it across the entire world.
California has taken some small steps in this direction with mandates such as the requirement of solar on new residential construction. However, we are still going about that the wrong way. Why on earth would we mandate solar installation on new residential buildings but not on new commercial buildings?
The vast flat acreage of the traditional California big-box retail, gas stations or fast-food restaurants, surrounded by a moat of baking black parking lots, is the perfect space for new solar panels. Commerce and industry should be paying for solar capacity instead of shoving the responsibility onto already overpriced housing that should ideally be shaded by trees and other growing things for the sake of energy and health.
The oil spill off of Orange County is just a more blatant manifestation of the damage we inflict to operate our poorly designed petro-society.
