John – 18 months after the start of the pandemic, life continues to be a slow-rolling nightmare for nannies, housecleaners, and home care workers.

Last month 28% were still out of work. Even for those who are still able to work, things are very bad: 3 out of 4 domestic workers we surveyed in August faced food insecurity.

It’s devastating that mothers, whose working lives are spent caring for others, are unable to care for their own children, parents, and families — and we will stop at nothing to end the injustice prolonging this nightmare.

Day-in and day-out, our team tackles some of our country's greatest problems important to women and families. We advocate to change existing labor laws that make it ok to earn less than $7.25 for service work, create game-changing new platforms that make it possible to take *paid* sick leave, connect undocumented workers with legal support when they’re threatened with deportation, and so much more.

We’ve all been through a pandemic but the reality is we haven’t experienced the COVID crisis equally.

Domestic workers have been on the frontlines in homes continuing to care for people with disabilities when families have been unable to, they’ve stepped in as nannies when schools closed, AND of course looking after their own kids when schools are shut down.

While many people are now returning back to some semblance of a new normal, that’s NOT the case for many domestic workers — and ‘normal’ isn’t a place anyone wants to return to.

Because the truth is, without a safety net some of our domestic worker members face personal pandemic-level crises each day. When a family member is sick, nannies, housecleaners, and homecare workers are faced with the impossible choice of staying to care for them or leaving them to care for another family in order to put food on the table.
