Former President Trump and I have something in common, we’ve both won New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District twice.
For the last two weeks a dark money group has been targeting me and other Democrats in swing districts because we want to lower the cost of prescription drugs by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices.
Pharmacists are seeing more patients walk away from the counter without their medication, families have to ration insulin, and some seniors have to consider traveling to Canada or Mexico to find cheaper options.
The pandemic has deepened this crisis.
Medicare, the U.S. government’s health insurance program for seniors, has long been prohibited from negotiating prices with drugmakers.
There are many popular items in the Build Back Better agenda that we need to pass -- from expanded child care to fighting climate change to repealing tax giveaways to the ultra-rich and making sure corporations and billionaires pay their fair share. Our planet, our kids, and future generations need us to act now.
Allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prices is among the most popular. It's a step the House took in 2019 with bipartisan support -- only to see it die in the Senate. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs already enjoys this leverage. It's common sense.
The pharmaceutical industry has monopoly power to set and raise prices. They spend hundreds of millions on lobbying and campaign ads to keep that monopoly. That's wrong, and we are trying to change it.
I was proud to be one of the PCCC's first endorsed candidates in 2018 and to attend the PCCC's candidate trainings. I look forward to working with you in this historic moment.
