Dear AFGE Activist,
We are proud to share that today the Biden administration released updated measures aimed at providing real student loan debt relief to thousands of public servants.
With the major reforms announced by the Department of Education, thousands of borrowers will be closer to debt relief.
Just two weeks ago we asked you to take action and tell the administration how the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program was deeply flawed. More than 500 AFGE activists took action and thanks to your involvement, along with years of pressure from coalition partners, we are finally seeing meaningful changes!
Key changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program include:
- Implementation of a Limited PSLF Waiver to count all prior payments made by student borrowers toward PSLF, regardless of loan program
- Simplifying what it means for a payment to qualify for PSLF
- Eliminating barriers for military service members to receive PSLF
- Automatically helping service members and other federal employees access PSLF
- Simplifying the PSLF application process
- Reviewing denied PSLF applications and identifying and correcting errors in PSLF processing
- Improving outreach and communication with PSLF-eligible borrowers

These improvements will be rolled out in groups over the coming months. For more information, please visit StudentAid.gov/PSLFWaiver.
Thank you for your continued activism to cancel student debt. We are seeing the fruits of our labor!
In Solidarity,
AFGE
