Friend,
It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks on Capitol Hill. We have good news, bad news, and a critical call to action.
Progressives won big. The Congressional Progressive Caucus and climate champions in Congress held the line and refused to pass the infrastructure bill without the climate-focused reconciliation package. Now, President Biden has publicly tied the fates of these bills together—in no small part thanks to the thousands of phone calls and letters from climate advocates like you over the past month.
But budget cuts are on the table. Despite the incredible popularity of programs in the Build Back Better agenda, a few conservative Democrats are looking to cut back. That means some of our top priorities are at risk.
Here's what we need to do: We have less than one month to ensure that strong climate legislation, including the Clean Electricity Performance Program and the clean energy tax credits, passes the House, passes the Senate, and lands on Biden's desk. Will you call your senators today and demand these critical programs remain in the bill?
Let's be clear: We want the reconciliation package to be as big as possible. Every program under consideration would substantially improve life for all Americans, now and for decades to come. And better yet, polling from our friends at Data for Progress shows that it's super popular, with voters supporting the Build Back Better agenda by a margin of +32 points.
We need to stand up for the CEPP and the clean energy tax credits with everything we have. These initiatives will directly reduce carbon pollution—they're absolutely essential for addressing the climate crisis.
Congress' new deadline for passing the reconciliation bill is October 31—the Glasgow global climate summit begins that day, and Biden knows he can't show up empty-handed. That gives us 25 days to fight harder than ever for these crucial programs. This is our moment—will you call your senators today?
Let's do this,
Lena Moffitt
