Are You Interested in Helping the National Constitution Center? The Center's new First Amendment Plan of Study provides lesson plans, videos, and other resources built around major constitution questions– regarding the First Amendment. The plan also focuses on civil dialogue and how to foster respectful conversation in the classroom. To measure the impact of the First Amendment Plan of Study on both student content knowledge and civil dialogue dispositions, the Center needs feedback. This is where you come in! If you are an 11th grade and/or 12th grade teacher who is interested in using the plan of study and sharing your experience, this opportunity is for you. We are looking for teachers to implement the following evaluation in their classroom this November to gather data on the learning outcomes of the materials. This process includes: First Amendment Content Knowledge Administering a brief pre-assessment on the content of First Amendment. Incorporating the plan of study in your curriculum. Administering a brief post-assessment to gauge the content that was learned during the lesson. Civil Dialogue Behaviors Administering a pre-assessment on ideas around civil dialogue in the classroom. Facilitating a civil dialogue. Administering a post-assessment on whether student feelings towards the conversation have changed. The process should take two to three class periods. The Center provides all necessary materials, including lesson plans, videos, and assessments. This is a wonderful opportunity for your students to engage in civil conversation with their peers and dive deeply into the First Amendment— all, while helping to shape the Center's educational materials. Summer Teacher Institutes at the National Constitution Center The education team at the Center is thrilled to host four Summer Teacher Institutes in July 2020. These week-long professional development opportunities provide educators the chance to experience the museum and the surrounding historic district, learn from constitutional scholars from across the philosophical spectrum, and collaborate with their peers from around the country. This year's dates and topics are: July 5–10: Federalism July 12–17: Federalism July 19–24: First Amendment July 26–31: Battles for Freedom and Equality Applications are available online and are due by Friday, December 20, 2019. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application on Friday, January 17, 2020.
