Domestic workers — who are mostly women of color and immigrant women — are three times as likely to be living in poverty as other workers. This has only been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is evident by looking at the 2 million women who have already left the workforce during the pandemic due to the rising costs of childcare, healthcare, and homecare.
Right now, Congress has a historic, one-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in these care workers by delivering a reconciliation package with a total $400 billion investment in home and community-based services (HCBS).
The need for care is universal, and the key to make it a reality for all is a total investment of $400 billion in HCBS and care infrastructure. Investing in HCBS will benefit us all.
This economic transformation will raise wages and economic security for workers; make home care jobs good jobs with dignity and good benefits; and positively impact our economic recovery by allowing workers to participate in the economy, which will create an estimated 1.1 million new jobs each year over the next decade.
Domestic work and care work should be given the same dignity, respect, and fair wages as any other job, without question or doubt.
