I’m proud to share with you that, yesterday, I introduced the John Lewis Voting
Rights Advancement Act on the Senate floor.

It is long past time we restore the Voting Rights Act. And as legislatures
across the country continue attacking our democracy with transparent efforts to
suppress the rights of communities to vote, there’s no time to waste. We must
take action to protect the fundamental right of every American citizen.

Congressman John Lewis was an icon and a dear friend. He marched -- and was
beaten bloody in the streets -- demanding that African Americans be able to
exercise their constitutional right to vote. His bravery and activism paved the
way toward the bipartisan passage of the original Voting Rights Act in 1965.

Just shy of half a century later, the Supreme Court ruled to weaken this
landmark legislation in 2013. And, sure enough, bad actors in state legislatures
across the country rushed in to make it harder for people, particularly people
of color, to vote.

We cannot allow this pernicious cycle of disenfranchisement to continue.

We must put a stop to these growing voter suppression efforts. We must honor
Congressman John Lewis’ legacy. We must restore the Voting Rights Act.

To pass this crucial legislation, we’ll need widespread support in the Senate.
So from Vermont to Alaska, let’s raise our voices together:
