When schools shut down in-person learning in the early days of the
pandemic, educators quickly developed some [2]astounding online
opportunities. That’s not something to leave in the past, [3]writes
Christine Shiau of the Institute's [4]Stevens Initiative. In particular,
educators should cultivate the idea of “virtual exchange,” in which
students from around the world gather in the same on-screen classroom,
building empathy and understanding along the way.

[7]Celebrating the Diversity within Hispanic Communities

As the country recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month, it is important to note
the US Latinx population is far from a monolith. It represents more than 20
countries of origin with members spread all across the political spectrum.
Reverend Dr. Gabriel Salguero, for instance, [8]isn’t easily categorized by
his religion or politics, but he takes inspiration in the variety of the
Hispanic experience as he works to pursue justice with his Evangelical
community. The reverend is a member of the Racial Justice & Religion
Commission for the [9]Inclusive America Project.

[13]Global Leaders Step Up to Speak Out

Each year, the [14]New Voices Fellowship selects local leaders in Africa,
Asia, and Latin America for intensive, ongoing training in the finer points

dissemination of [15]high-quality, actionable initiatives that change lives
all over the world. The experience can also be life-changing for the
fellows themselves. Nominations for next year’s fellowship are [16]open
until October 20.

[20]The World of Sports in a Changing Climate

Sports may seem far removed from climate concerns, but only for those who
haven’t played a lunchtime game of soccer lately. In a [21]forum hosted by
the [22]Sports & Society Program, an athlete, an author, and the developer
of a carbon-neutral sports venue discussed [23]the effects of climate
change on our favorite pastimes and ways the sporting world can be more
sensitive to its own impact.
