Dear John,

On Monday, the Chancellor Rishi Sunak made some false claims about how government spending works. He was giving his speech at the Conservative Party Conference and implied that the only money governments have to spend is the money it gets from the public in taxes - which we know is wrong.

What he said is damaging. It’s used to justify raising taxes on low-paid people and starving our public services of the money they need. And millions of people probably watched the key sections of his speech on the news yesterday.

Today, we’re going to set the record straight by working together to expose what he said, and explain how the government can safely pay for everything we need. Hundreds of thousands of people share Positive Money’s videos - so together we can empower the public with the facts. John, please will you help by sharing this 2-minute video now?

When each of us shares a video on social media - or with a few friends in an email - it adds up to a snowball effect. Together, we can reach literally millions of people. [1] And we can grow the public's understanding of how our economy really works.

One of the most damaging misconceptions of the last few decades is that the government is limited in what it can spend. Margaret Thatcher famously said at the 1983 Conservative Party conference, “There is no such thing as public money, there is only taxpayers’ money.” [2] But she was wrong. [3] And it’s this thinking that has been used to justify a devastating decade of austerity. Our NHS, local councils and all of us who rely on them are now suffering because of it.

John, we cannot let this go on any more - our government leaders making damaging false claims and getting away with it. We need our government to spend money to deal with the climate crisis. We need our government to invest in affordable housing and green jobs to deal with the shameful levels of inequality and poverty. And there’s no reason it can’t.

By using the power of the Bank of England, and by taxing the wealth of the richest people in our society, the government can pay for everything our society needs to thrive. Rishi Sunak needs to hear this message. John, please will you help spread the truth today?

Together we’re helping to change the narrative. Thank you for all you do,

Chloe, Zack, Rachel and the rest of the Positive Money team
