Wednesdays with Warner: Wed, October 6, 8:15am – 9:15am The quest to convince Senator Warner to support workers' right to organize continues. The state Democratic Party has called on him to sign the PRO Act. Without major labor law reform, corporations can continue to block workers' efforts to unionize through intimidation, retaliation, and delay. The Coalition to Repeal Right to Work will host a gathering at the picnic table at Windmill Hill Park, 500 South Lee St., Alexandria at 8:15 am. The Painters Union will lead a group outside Sen. Warner's District Office, 8000 Towers Crescent Drive, Vienna, VA at 8:30 am.

Breaking News: Kellogg’s workers strike Some 1,400 Kellogg's workers struck the company on Tuesday. The workers are members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) and work in Battle Creek, MI, Omaha, NE, Lancaster, PA and Memphis, TN, where they produce Kellogg ready-to-eat cereals including Rice Krispies, Raisin Bran, Froot Loops, Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes. “For more than a year throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Kellogg workers around the country have been working long, hard hours, day in and day out," said BCTGM President Anthony Shelton. "“Kellogg’s response to these loyal, hardworking employees has been to demand these workers give up quality health care, retirement benefits, and holiday and vacation pay." Kellogg is making these demands as they rake in record profits, Shelton noted, adding that "we will support them for as long as it takes to force Kellogg to negotiate a fair contract."
Fairfax workers demand seat at the table Fairfax County employees and community allies gathered at the Fairfax Government Center Tuesday afternoon to rally for a seat at the table before testifying at a public hearing on collective bargaining. "We’ve seen the positive impact of collective bargaining,” said Christian Martinez Lemus of CASA. “Public employees in 47 other states and DC already have collective bargaining rights. Fairfax County needs to join them." Tammie Wondong, SEIU Virginia 512, said that "After months of hard work and negotiations with the county, we have an ordinance draft. But there are changes that must be made to make sure that we win MEANINGFUL collective bargaining for ALL county workers.” “County workers are the frontline experts,” said worker Maya Castillo. “They deserve a seat at the table."
Nurses hail DC passage of Medicare for All resolution The DC City Council on Tuesday passed a National Nurses United-backed resolution in support of Medicare for All. “Nurses have long been at the forefront of the push for health care as a human right, and we are so proud to have stood strong with our allies to get this D.C. Council Medicare for All resolution across the finish line,” said Stephanie Sims, RN, a member of National Nurses United and resident of Ward 8. “COVID-19 has driven home the massive shortcomings of our fragmented, profit-based health care system and highlighted the health disparities in which our Black, Brown and Indigenous patients have died at disproportionate rates.” Sims added that “We need Medicare for All now, and this resolution sends a strong message that the leadership of our nation’s capital puts patients first — and we demand Congress do the same by backing Medicare for All.”
