Right now, when it comes to Delta there is nothing that is more important than getting vaccinated. There are so many reasons to do it. To protect yourself, your children, your family. If you want to travel, if you are sick of lockdowns, whatever it is, now is the time. The vaccine is safe, it’s free and there are places you could jump in the car and get it done right now with no appointment needed. ** Youth Parliament 2022

It’s Youth Parliament time again. I was very lucky in my final year at school (many years ago!) to go to the first Youth Parliament. As it happens my plane from Dunedin could not get in because of fog! I was so disappointed to miss it, but I managed to come up a few weeks later and get shown around the place. It was a momentous occasion for another reason as it was the day that David Lange resigned!

I know how rewarding programmes like Youth Parliament can be, it’s such a unique opportunity to see first-hand what Parliament’s all about and get involved in your community. ** Three Waters Reform
------------------------------------------------------------

You might have heard a bit of talk about the Three Waters Reform. This is a really important programme of work that is designed to make sure we have the water infrastructure we need to support our communities. Few things in life are more vital than water. But sadly the way these assets have been managed over the years has not been good enough. A report from the Water Industry Commission for Scotland report found New Zealand needs to invest between $120 billion and $185 billion over the next 30 years to get them up to scratch. The Government’s announced a $2.5 billion fund to support councils though the three waters reform, bringing its total commitment in this area to nearly $3.5 billion.

It is of course reasonable to ask if this is money well spent. After all you could argue we have got by without a national water strategy up to now. But that misses the scale of the need we face. All New Zealanders are entitled to safe, clean water, wherever they live. The tragedy at Havelock North, where contamination cost lives, and ageing pipes and infrastructure all around the country are reminders of how fragile current supply can be.

More to the point is what the cost will be if we don’t act now. We can wait and debate, but that won’t slow the rate at which infrastructure continues to age. We also risk many communities simply failing to cope. Without reform, the average household cost in Wellington Central is projected to rise to $2400 per year (from an average today of $950 per year). With reform, this bill would drop to $1260 per year. If we don’t act now, the question is when. Procrastination is rarely a winning strategy. Putting our water costs off will only see them rise.
