Black History Month is officially in Alaska Statutes as the Bill was signed by the Governor on September 19th. This is to honor and recognize the contributions that African-Americans have made in the history of Alaska and the United States.  Alaska Native Heritage Month was also signed into State Statutes on October 5th by the Governor which recognizes the First Alaskans and the rich culture and traditions they've established on this land from the Arctic to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta through Southeast Alaska. Celebrating the different cultures and traditions of indigenous peoples only makes us stronger as a community and helps us understand why the land we live on is sacred. Also, above you can see the full panel interview where Representative Zulkosky and I were recognized for our efforts in moving forward House Bill 126 on October 15th in Fairbanks at the First Alaskan Institute's Elders and Youth Conference. We were very pleased to have Alaska's very own Portugal. The Man, be a part of the event.

As fall was approaching, my staff and I were delighted to be able to harvest the fresh kale that the Building Manager for Anchorage Legislative Information Office planted in the Spring. We checked with the Manager to determine if the kale had pesticides and we were pleased it was clean. As the Grounds Keepers were starting to remove the kale and other foliage, we had an idea to make use of the kale and not let it go to waste.

We reached out to Beans Café and they were excited for the donation of seventy pounds of fresh kale. What a great use of beautiful edibles when the season ended. Beans Café was grateful for this wonderful donation.

In collaboration with the University of Alaska, the Municipality of Anchorage has created a Climate Action Plan that focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for the impacts of climate change. Why do we need it? Anchorage is already experiencing the effects of climate change. Increased Wildfire Risk > Damages homes and property: puts lives and health at risk: costs money. Less Snow More Ice > Icy roads; less winter recreation opportunities; less reflected light. Unpredictable Salmon Returns > Threatens culture and way of life; increased dependence on imported food; jobs at risk. Invasive Pests > Spruce bark beetle kills forests; ticks spread disease.
