Facebook is having a terrible week, John!
I’m sure you know by now that Facebook and its monopoly of companies (Instagram and WhatsApp) were all down for hours yesterday due to a network issue. Businesses were disrupted and billions of people were locked out of the biggest social platform on the planet.
It just goes to show you how dangerous it can be to have so many companies under one umbrella, all depending on the same technology.
And today, Frances Haugen, the former Facebook product manager, testified before Congress telling the lawmakers much of what we already know:
Facebook wants people to get upset and be mad at each other so they can keep people on Facebook and keep making record profits.
Facebook’s own algorithm that decides what you see on your own Facebook feed is designed to prioritize content that is divisive. Facebook has also become one of the biggest platforms for spreading misinformation, and its own algorithm is the biggest source of suggesting extremist groups to its users.
If you haven’t already signed our petition to Facebook, add your name and tell Facebook to end its divisive algorithm NOW!
We must up the pressure on Facebook to change its harmful algorithm. We have to fight back against Facebook’s efforts to foster division, hate and enable so much misinformation to spread on its platform. Facebook must bring back the chronological news feed!
