Supporter,

The costs of dirty fossil fuels are once again on full display: Wetlands destroyed. Beaches polluted. Dead fish and birds washing ashore. Toxic fumes in the air. All happening in my backyard in Southern California.

And it's unclear if the leak pouring over 144,000 gallons of crude oil into the water off the coast of Southern California has even been fully stopped.

What is clear, however, is the solution to preventing future catastrophes: stopping our reliance on fossil fuels. As we've seen time and again, drilling means spilling. We need to commit to a clean energy economy to end preventable disasters like this one—to keep natural places clean and our communities healthy.

We've set a goal of 100 new Wilderness Guardians before midnight tonight to respond to this urgent moment and push for an end to dirty fossil fuels.

I know firsthand how important beaches are for many people in southern California, from coastal residents to inland communities who use them as a refuge from the heat. I know the impacts that closing them will have on local communities and economies. I know the heartbreak of seeing oil and wildlife wash up on these beautiful beaches.

As I write this, authorities are still seeing dead fish and sea birds washing up on shore, and they're concerned with oil seeping into the food chain in local ecosystems. Beaches have been closed over concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals, which can cause eye and skin irritation, headache and vomiting. This disaster will continue to have devastating impacts for weeks and months ahead.

For too long, fossil fuel interests have been able to put their profits over wildlife, our environment, and our very health. It has to end now.

We're working with coalition partners to stop dirty pipelines like Line 3—including a day of action next week at the White House. We're pushing to pass the Build Back Better Act, and ensure climate and clean energy standards remain at the scale and scope we need. We're targeting Wall Street and big banks to keep them from financing fossil fuel projects. We're demanding the phase out of oil drilling here in California.

Your support is critical to sustaining these campaigns—especially when we are up against the fossil fuel industry. And now is the time to go as big as we can. Public demand for climate action is at a record high, and we have a small window of opportunity for bold and transformative change.
