ANNOUNCEMENTS

DSA-LA Endorses Hugo Soto-Martinez for Los Angeles City Council

Results are in – after a week of balloting, DSA-LA members have overwhelmingly voted to endorse DSA-LA member Hugo Soto-Martinez’s candidacy for Los Angeles City Council District 13! There were 451 yes votes, and 57 no votes.

Mobilizing around this race will be a top electoral priority over the next year. Watch for an announcement on the establishment of a campaign working group, and if you’re eager to get started to support our comrade’s campaign for City Council, you can fill out the form here to volunteer.

.

From our Electoral Politics recommendation statement issued last week:

The Hugo Soto-Martinez campaign for LA City Council District 13 offers an incredible opportunity for DSA Los Angeles: to accelerate the leftward shift in Los Angeles city politics that began in 2020; to elect a longtime socialist union organizer, a core chapter member; to activate hundreds of our members in a diverse, renter-heavy district; and to keep building coalitions with labor and broad social justice campaigns across Los Angeles.

Hugo has been an active member of DSA-LA since early 2019, including serving as a chapter officer for NOlympics for two terms and as a delegate to the 2021 National Convention. The son of immigrant street vendors and a native Angeleno, Hugo has been a union organizer with UNITE HERE Local 11, a regular labor ally of DSA-LA, for over 15 years, since being a part of a union drive as a hotel worker. Hugo has also been an organizer across many non-union organizing campaigns, including campaigns around immigration, racial justice, and anti-police brutality.

BREAKING: IATSE STRIKE AUTHORIZATION VOTE RESULTS

With over 89% turnout, over 98% of IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) voters have said YES to authorize a strike. That is a massive statement from workers across 36 different locals. You can read more about it here!

IATSE representatives will now go back to the AMPTP to try and negotiate a fair contract for workers below-the-line, with an incredible amount of leverage.

We invite all DSA and IATSE dual members to join us tonight at 7:00PM PST to discuss this result, analyze the last few weeks, unpack their experiences, and talk through our next steps. Please note that is meeting is intended for only members of IATSE and DSA. Please RSVP here!

We'll also be hosting a Robert's Rules Training + Phone Banking Event on Wednesday, October 13, from 6-8pm! (Robert's Rules are the rules and procedures we use to make decisions. Members interested in learning about how we reach decisions at meetings are encouraged to attend!)

We're depending on our members to help make sure we reach quorum (ie, have enough people to make representative decisions), so we need as many people coming to help phone bank our membership as possible!

Mutual Aid Book Club: Bullshit Jobs Pt. 3

Tuesday, October 5 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Do you ever ponder why there’s so much Bullshit in our economic system?

The Mutual Aid Book Club is diving into our series on Alienation by continuing David Graeber’s Bullshit Jobs. For our third encounter, we’re reading Chapters 5 and 6 (“Why are Bullshit Jobs Proliferating?” and “Why do we as a society not object to pointless employment?”) We hope to hear your thoughts on why there seems to be no end to this bullshit, as it seems to just spread and spread!

Doing the reading isn’t a requirement for participating, but those who are in need of the text can find the full work here: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/david-graeber-bullshit-jobs

Please RSVP to this event to get connection information.

The Mutual Aid Book Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month.
