John,

Last weekend, I joined 400 other Montanans in Helena to fight for choice at the Montana March for Reproductive Rights. This march and rally was part of a nationwide day of action in response to the ongoing Republican attacks on access to abortion and reproductive choice across the country.

I was honored to speak at the rally, sharing my personal experience fighting back against anti-choice legislation in Montana’s House of Representatives. You can watch my speech here: [link removed]

Serving for three terms, I’ve come to understand the truth about these bills, and what’s really at stake. Make no mistake: they have never been about anyone’s health.

I have been a member of the House Judiciary Committee since I began serving in 2017. In that time, I have seen numerous abortion bills come across my desk that attempted to take away health care options for Montanans, including some that would impact my own care at a time when I was struggling with my health.

If these previous experiences weren’t enough to show us the true intentions of our Republican-controlled legislature, they became crystal clear last legislative session. “Born Alive” legislation — based on the myth that botched live abortions commonly occur — came to us in two forms in 2021: a bill that, if brought for a vote, would have passed and been signed by Governor Greg Gianforte, and a referendum that would go to the ballot in 2022.

They had every chance to pass the policy bill then and there, but refused to bring the bill up for a vote. In a last effort to pass this horrible bill outright rather than send the referendum to the 2022 ballot, I stood up on the House floor on the last day of the session, and tried to bring it up for a vote.

The motion failed, which means this awful referendum will be on your ballot in November of 2022.

Why?

Because this isn't about protecting anyone’s health. This is about protecting the power of the GOP — they want to use this anti-choice ballot initiative to drive their voters to the polls next year.

That’s why last weekend’s march was so important, why we have to keep up the energy against these despicable attacks on reproductive health, and why we need to elect leaders who will defend choice for every Montanan.

I will always stand up for choice. Together, we can stop Republicans from turning back the clock on reproductive rights and health care.
